Bangalore Top Indian City in World Survey

A global survey compiled by the Quality of Living Survey – Worldwide Rankings 2011 carried out by Mercer the major human resource consultancy shows Bangalore as India’s No. 1 City. The Information Technology hub has the biggest IT companies and some of the best colleges and institutions and is well on the way to becoming an economic major. Real Estate is also booming. Residential as well as commercial properties both are growing leaps and bounds.

Bangalore may have surged ahead of New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai as the number one city to live in, in India but in a worldwide survey it still ranks only 141st out of 221 cities surveyed. While Vienna has been ranked as the number one city to live in, Zurich Auckland, Munich, Dusseldorf, Vancouver, Frankfurt Geneva, Copenhagen and Berne are other top notch cities in the list where quality of living is one of the best in the world. Among the Indian cities New Delhi is ranked 143rd, Mumbai 144th, Chennai 150th and Kolkata 151st. Despite the great economic growth Indian cities continue to languish at the lower end of the scale.
As far as personal safety standards are concerned Luxembourg has been ranked as the safest city, Bern, Helsinki, Zurich, Vienna, Geneva and Stockholm also figure high on the list on this parameter.

Bangalore is India’s 3rd most populous city and a great cultural hub and is on the way to becoming India’s fastest growing metropolitan city, leading to huge real estate demand. It might rank 117th but it is still considered the safest Indian city along with having the best standards of living. New Delhi and Kolkata are tied at 127th position. Mumbai is 142nd in this regard.

The factors considered while judging the cities personal safety standards included crime levels, law enforcement, internal stability and international relations. From the survey it is evident that Indian cities have a lot of catching up to do as far as quality of living and personal safety standards are concerned.

India’s Real Estate Industry Faces Urban Challenges

The real estate industry might have some of its members listed on the Forbes (India version) list of 100 richest men in India showing the boom in real estate industry. This could perhaps be attributed to the economic growth in India leading to infrastructural demands. The economy has seen an influx of young aspirants heading for the cities and the young careerist soon begin to hunt for a ‘dream house’. Considering that a ‘home of our own’ will always be on the anvil the real estate industrycould seem to be on solid ground yet it faces some real time challenges from urbanization. With 90% of the government revenues coming from 30% of the urban population it is but apparent that urbanization is important for economic development. What needs to be done to mange the disparate conditions in the cities is long term planning. A well planned and organized urban development will be a boon not only to the real estate industry but to the urban society as a whole.

Today the cities have grown beyond imagination into unplanned, horrendous monstrosities where the dwindling services in housing, water, healthcare, sanitation and energy have only mitigated the problems. The 2001 census says that 25% of cities are taken up by slums. In addition to the slums urban dwellers have to face the prospect of poor sanitation, environmental degradation, poor health services and infrastructure that is strained beyond repair.

Why Indianeeds to fix this unplanned urban growth urgently is because by 2050, about 914 million Indians are going to be living in cities according to the UN World Urbanization Prospects. Instead of this being good news for the real estate industry it is no news unless water, electricity, sanitation, solid waste management are in place.

The concept of the ‘integrated township’ has taken root in a big way to counter some of the problems that urbanization brings in its wake. However these sophisticated townships cannot give a miss to problems of water and electricity. The real estate industry cannot fail to suffer as a result of this infrastructural drawback. Failing civic infrastructure can break the back bone of the real estate industry especially if there is a backward flow of human capital from the cities to green belts. A productive industry cannot run efficiently without talent but it is likely that the thinking population could depart from the sprawling mess to pastures that are not only greener but more manageable.

Red tapism that winds the real estate industry in a tight bind could also strangulate it unless the system becomes more transparent and less complex. Before a project is finally started, the builder will already have gone through 24 to 36 months of harrowing red tapism which involves buying the land, getting the necessary permits and also the various approval certificates before they can think of the ‘bhoomi pooja.’

Unplanned urban development is not only detrimental to real estate but to macro-economic development as well. Any apathy shown now in addressing the weaknesses in the cities, exaggerated by infrastructural failures will definitely spell doom for the real estate industry besides causing unmitigated problems for the urban society.

DETOXIFY YOUR BODY WITH PANCHAKARMA

In rainy season all vata problems get aggrevated. Peoples start to complain bodyache, indigestion, increased joint pain, back pain, increased tingling numbness of hands, legs, in short, all the pain factor get increased.

In Aayurveda for this purpose seasonal panchakarma is recommended. In rainy season vata get vitiated which is a cause of above mentioned complaints. To normalize this increased vitiated vata ‘basti’ is a panchakarma recommended.

What is ‘basti’?

Basti is a procedure to treat patients with herbal medicines, decoctions, medicated oils, ghee, honey, saindhav salt etc where mode of drug administration is through anus.

Action of basti

As large intestine is prime location of vata if we treat patients by this method vitiated vata get subside at its major place and our vata problems get subside at it’s own place do not find path to increase at it’s another places such as joints, bones, back, skin etc. Large intestine has large absorption area i.e. intestinal flora, which permits absorption of drug immediately after it’s administration so quick results are possible with this panchkarma.

It is one of the major five detoxification programs described in Aayurvedic texts. As vata get increased with dryness, coldness, In basti we use medicated oils, decoctions whose characteristics are opposite to vata so vata get subsided and we get relief from all pains, constipation vata skin diseases etc.

By using different types of basti we can treat all diseases i.e. diseases of all 3 doshas, they get balanced and health is achieved.

By this procedure you can achieve long healthy life, it gives healthy glow o your skin. It can reduce or increase your weight, it is age protector-it reduces signs of aging-dry saggy skin becomes tight. It rejuvenate your body, skin. Basti gives strength to you.

In this way basti itself is a complete treatment.

Precautions for basti

It is a scientific procedure you should give sufficient time for proper results. It needs some diet and habit regimen. You should avoid—

1] Travelling, sun exposure, and heavy exercise

2] Loud talking ,delivering speech,

3] Day time sleep, late night sleep, coitus

4] Heavy to digest food ,unhealthy fast food, hotel food etc.

Take light, healthy, satwik diet, and follow good habits during this procedure.

Types of basti

Two major types-Types dependant on drugs used for basti

1]Niruha basti-This basti contains herbal decoction+medicated oil+honey+saindhav salt etc. Its quantity is more so it is expelled immediately from body. It detoxify your body by expelling vitiated dosha with decoction.

2]Anuvasan basti-This basti contains only medicated oils, it’s quantity is less so it retains in body 1 hr to 12 hrs. It nourishes your body, oleates internally and there by reduces vata.

Generally both bastis are used on alternate day, but we can use only oil basti also, especially for old age patients, or patients with chronic constipation, dryness etc.

Duration of basti

There are many courses of basti-common ones are

3 Days basti for rejuvenation therapy called as ‘yuktaratha basti where above mentioned diet and habit regimens are not compulsory.

8 Days basti course-where niruha and anuvasan are given alternately.

15/16 days basti course-for obesity or chronic diseases.

30 days basti course for chronic, difficult to treat patients, where more dosha are involved since many days.

21 days basti course these bastis are bone nourishing basti. These are given for osteoarthritis, back pain, calcium defficiency, spondylosis, joint pain etc.3 subsequent bastis are given at interval of 5-7 days.

There are many bastis described in Aayurvedic text specific for every disease, infertility, blood diseases etc.

Procedure of basti-

Prebasti-Whole body massage is given with medicated oil. This is 45-60 minutes session. After that steam bath is given with herbal decoction.

Basti-Medicine is given to patient through anus under all aseptic precautions.

Post basti- Patient should take rest for half an hour, when he has sensation to pass stool he can do that. After that he has to take hot water bath and then take hot easy to digest food.

For this procedure 1.5 to 2 hours required, When you undergo proper scientific basti procedure in this rainy it will keep you healthy for at least 1 year

Precautions a diabetic should take during travelling on holidays

Precautions  a diabetic should take during travelling on holidays.

  1. Always carry and wear medical identification that says that you have diabetes .
  2. Keep medication, insulin and syringes readily available in your carry on luggage.
  3. Carry prescriptions for medications and blood glucose testing supplies.
  4. If you are travelling abroad, carry a letter  from your clinic for customs purposes, explaining why you are carrying syringes and needles. Please note that some pen injectors show up on the metal detector at airports, you are likely to have to take it out and explain that it is not a weapon.
  5. Plan ahead for changes in meal times. Plan times for testing your blood glucose.
  6. Carry food and some form of fast acting carbohydrates (e.g. sugar).
  7. Find out how and where to obtain emergency medical help.
  8. Follow your meal plan and activity routine.
  9. Take your medications as prescribed by your doctor.
  10. Test your blood glucose regularly; test more frequently if you are ill.
  11. Check carefully that your own insurance covers diabetic emergencies for your holidays.
  12. Discuss the implications of different units of insulin with you diabetologist.
  13. Take warm clothing when travelling to cold destinations. Make sure your insulin does not freeze.
  14. When sunbathing or relaxing in the heat, be aware of hypoglycaemic episodes or dehydration due to heat. Drink plenty of water.
  15. Whenever possible learn the basics in the local language e.g. “I am a diabetic, please give me something sweet to drink, please call a doctor.”

What is Hypoglycaemia?

The blood glucose level of a fasting normal person varies between 80-120 mg/dl.

Persons with diabetes develop symptoms when the blood glucose falls below the normal limits . This is called hypoglycaemia.

Blood sugar levels for this state may differ from person to person. If this condition is not recognized timely & treated promptly it can result in seizures, coma or even death.

Hypoglycaemia is fairly easy to treat and easy to avoid if you spend a little time learning what causes hypoglycaemia, how to correct and prevent it.

CAUSES

  1. Skipping or delaying a meal or eating less than usual.
  2. Unusual amount of exercise.
  3. Overdose of medication.
  4. Taking oral hypoglycaemic agents or insulin during fasting.
  5. Taking alcohol without taking food.
  6. Illness.

SYMPTOMS

      Adrenergic Symptoms

  1. Excessive hunger
  2. Excessive sweating
  3. Palpitation
  4. Weakness
  5. Nervousness
  6. Nausea

Hypoglcaemia also results in an impaired function of nervous system because glucose is the only source of energy for the nervous system.

    Neuroglycopenic Symptoms

  1. Headache
  2. Lack of concentration
  3. Slurred speech
  4. Double vision
  5. Unusual behavior
  6. Fits

Hypoglycaemia without warning signals

Sweating and trembling are the early signals of hypoglycaemia. Such signals may be absent in long-term diabetes. Such persons should watch for other signs of hypoglycaemia. Home blood glucose monitoring is very useful in such cases.

Sometimes hypoglycaemia can occur at night & symptoms are-

  • Nightmares
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Morning headache
  • Confusion

If this happens, dose of insulin or oral medicine can be adjusted or changed with the advise of the doctor.

How to manage Hypoglycaemia?

The treatment is to raise the blood sugar levels immediately.

Hypoglycaemic reactions can be mild to moderate & can be corrected by consumption of any food depending upon the severity.

If the symptoms are mild, tea, coffee or milk with sugar or any available food can be taken orally.

If the patient is drowsy or unconscious, he or she has to be rushed to the doctor to start I.V. glucose without wasting time. Self-treatment is not recommended.

FOR TOMORROWS HEALTHY AND INTELLIGENT CHILD

It is now universally / scientifically proven that the child in the womb is not just a mindless mass of flesh but a highly responsive human being. It is capable of receiving, understanding and responding to external stimuli. Thus the child in womb has the right to receive positive and enriching feedback or Garbhasanskara.

The body in the womb registers everything that the mother goes through. He understands which things make the mother happy and what makes her unhappy. Thus education of character building of a child in the womb begins right from conception and continues through entire pregnancy period.

Thus today’s would be mothers should understand the importance of Garbhasanskara, as it helps in transmitting positive vibrations, good values, proper nutrition of the child in the womb as well as helps in maintaining proper health of the mother throughout her pregnancy period. Thus Garbhasanskara is necessary for development of good mental ability, physiological and spiritual development of the child.

Garbhasanskara means a concept of safe motherhood. Furthermore are the essentials of Garbhasanskara described as per Ayurveda:

Study Skills!!! WHAT ARE THEY ????

I had an interesting conversation with my 15-year-old cousin a few years ago, which led to a lot of introspection. The kid was about to go to std 10, and just about every one who was any one had told him that he had to lift his game, if he wanted to get anywhere in life  – standard practice that most of us indulge in.

But, none of us adults had ever paused to think what was happening to him. What he must be going through. Most important, all of us were warning him, but none of us had taken the time out to tell him what he should do, how he should change.

One day, in absolute anguish he turns to me and says – Dada, all this is fine. But why doesn’t any one tell me what they mean by this. “Acchi padhai karo yane kya karo? I wish at least you would tell me. Obviously you know how, for without that you could not have done all that you have in your life !!!!”

That stopped me in my tracks. When I tried to recollect how many time I had same – obviously inane stuff to children in the important years of their academic life, it made me blush. And, I swore to myself never ever to do that again. That also meant I went back to my books, tried to find out what had worked for me, did another postgraduate diploma in education, and armed with all this took up the mission of spreading the idea and importance of Study Skills.

When I started working on this project a few years ago, I found I had my work cutout for me. Almost everyone – including the teachers, the parents, the principals keep reminding the students the need for good marks – but nowhere are the techniques for study ever given to them.

As a matter of fact, when I approached some schools with the offer to hold study skills workshops, I was told in no uncertain terms that such frippery was not needed – their students have succeeded without them so far, and nothing has changed so drastically as to their needing training in study skills!!! Other answers included – this is additional unneeded burden for the parents, and hence the school board could not even recommend it.

So, what then are these study skills that I am going on about?

Study skills are those skills using which the student – at any time in his or her life can improve the absorption and retention of information so essential to convince the examiner that he or she has studied and knows the subject.

They include time-tested techniques to become an active participant in studying which in turn will help

The students find their own goals

Ensure that they have the motivation to work towards these goals,

By helping them

Increase their reading speed

Comprehend what is read better

Retain what is read

Improve memory and recall when needed

Improve concentration span

Learn how to think

Encourage proper use of time

Etc. etc.,etc.

How many times have you as parents and teachers said about your wards/pupils – he/she could do better but does not? About others you might have said, what a pity he/she works so hard, but because of lack of enough brainpower he cannot get the marks that his work should entail?

Well, let me assure you, modern research into brain seems to indicate that almost all of us have the same number of brain cells that should dictate our success – what we lack is systems and techniques for their proper use. AND, Use of the correct Study Skills will help you get over that barrier.

Henceforth my column aims to be the place for parents, teachers and students to turn to by answering their questions about How to study SMARTER and become a better and well-balanced independent learner.

LASER can evaporate kidney stones

LASER can evaporate kidney stones

There are a lot of misconceptions about LASERs . It is totally wrong to assume that any operation related to kidney stones done without cut on the body is a  LASER operation.

Procedures like ESWL, Endoscopic mechanical  fragmentation of stones by Lithoclastetc are all wrongly labeled as LASER operations. Actually LASER is a machine which gives a strong light energy by a small 1 mm diameter fibre  onto the stone & the stone gets fragmented or evaporated. Only a few Institutes specialized in Urology have these LASER machines (like Pramodini Urology Foundation ).

LASER machines are beneficial to the patients of kidney stones in various ways. The bladder stones can be cleared through the urethra through a 2 to 3 mm diameter endoscope. Due to the small size of the instruments, the recovery is very fast & postoperative pain minimal. Laser can give tremendous advantage to the patients of stones in the ureter. We can approach the stone through urinary passage through a 2 mm endoscope & LASER can evaporate the stone by just painting LASER energy on the stone without giving any pressure. Also Laser can evaporate 80 % of the stone & only dust like particles of the stone remain ,which are washed away. So we can avoid putting a tube in the kidney ( stent ). LASER is the strongest energy that  can evaporate even the hardest possible stones& is the safest as the depth of penetration into the tissues is just 1 mm.

The two new revolutionary operations , now available are RIRS & Mini PERC, which are possible only because of LASERS. In RIRS (Retrograde Intra Renal Surgery ) a flexible, long, slender endoscope is passed through urethra upto the kidney & the stone in the kidney is evaporated. This can avoid making a hole in the body as in PCNL. In Mini PERC a tiny 4 mm hole is made in the back( instead of 10 mm hole as in PCNL )& the kidney stone is evaporated by LASER.

LASER is the only instrument which isflexible (which can be bent) & yet is the strongest energy  to burn the stone out & yet is just 1 mm in diameter so that it can be easily passed through smallest possible instrument & yet is very safe.

NO PILES ONLY SMILES FOR MILES…

Have we ever realized that day by day we are becoming victims of our modern lifestyles? On the one hand, most of us take pride in our smartness and efficiency, hard working nature and dedication to work, but on the other hand, when health gets affected we tend to lower our guards. Arguably, our modern lifestyle pattern has presented us with its own set of side effects. Commonest of them are diseases like Diabetes, Hypertension, Obesity, Constipation and Piles. With growing prevalence and incidence of these lifestyle diseases, the medical fraternity has taken note and evolved specialties and expertise in each of these disease states. We have Diabetologists, Cardiologists, Obesity Surgeons and Proctologists, having expertise in these respective diseases. This presents us with a great opportunity to receive the best treatment from experts in their respective fields.

With the launch of Healing Hands Clinic at Tilak Road, the first Proctology Clinic in Pune, by the leading Procto-Surgeon Dr Ashwin Porwal, the speciality of Proctology will be offered for the diagnosis, treatment and cure of all patients who have silently suffered with anorectal diseases like Constipation, Piles, Fissure and Fistula. On this momentous day Dr Porwal remarked, “We have launched Healing Hands Clinic with a vision of providing our patients with the most innovative and minimally invasive cure for Constipation and Piles.” He also envisioned his goal of “caring for and curing every patient of his or her anorectal disease.”

Dr Ashwin Porwal has many firsts to his name. He is the first surgeon in Maharashtra and among the select few in the country to perform the STARR surgery, a surgical treatment for chronic Constipation which was invented 10 years back in Europe. He has successfully treated over 800 patients suffering with Piles, with the advanced and relatively painless surgical technique MIPH, popularly known as Stapler surgery for piles. Dr Porwal says, “I see many new patients daily who suffer with chronic Constipation and Piles. Out of them 30% are young and educated. They require patient counseling and detailed explanation. Explaining them the problem and assuring them of utmost care is our aim. Many patients fail to explain their problem due to inhibitions or fear of conventional surgery. But its important to tell them that now there is hope, as innovative treatments are available.” For such patients have 24 hour helpline number – 8888288884 and consultation with Dr. Porwal is also available at Poona Hospital, Jehangir Hospital, Inamdar Hospital and Sharada Clinic.

Dr Porwal shares, “The Proctology Clinic focuses on in depth understanding of anorectal problems, and providing patients with utmost care and complete cure from various anorectal diseases like Constipation, Piles, Fissure and Fistula. The commonest of all these diseases is Piles, which is a condition where the Piles Vessels (haemorrhoids) swell up mainly due to sitting in one place or standing for long hours, straining during defecation, improper dietary habits, smoking and consumption of alcohol. It presents with 4 Grades, among which chronic. Piles problem may require an innovative MIPH Surgery (Stapler Surgery). It’s a painless procedure, done through the natural route, without any cuts outside, therefore it requires no bandage or dressings, and the patient is discharged within 24 hours. “

Similarly, there is a surgical alternative that may be able to help women, who were unable to find solutions in the past for a type of Chronic Constipation called Obstructed Defecation Syndrome (ODS). Multiple trips to the bathroom, prolonged straining, incomplete elimination of bowel and routine use of laxatives are some of the frequent symptoms of ODS. Defecography, a diagnostic test for chronic constipation, a newly introduced technique in Pune will help diagnose this condition. If medicine and diet don’t work then an innovative procedure called the STARR Surgery that is performed through the natural route, without any external incisions is suggested.

Ms DhanashreeKarmarkar, Clinical Nutritionist working with Dr. Porwal adds, “Your entire digestion & bowel movements depend on your body’s physical activity. You have to add a lot of fibre to your diet if you are suffering from chronic constipation. Essentially, you shouldn’t bother about the quantity of diet but its quality. It’s advisable to break down your meals into small portions and have it after small intervals. Consume a lot of fresh salads, fruits, green vegetables and increase your water intake. Last but not the least, you should exercise routinely.”

On a concluding note Dr Porwal says, “It is always better to give first priority to health. Today’s advancements in Science have proven results that help us to take utmost care of patients. So keeping aside all worries and fears, patients should let us help them for a healthier and better future.”

Dr. Ashwin Porwal

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy means physiotherapeutic system of medicine where physical agents like heat, cold, light, water, electricity and exercises including mobilization and manipulation are used as treatment modalities which have diagnosic, prognostic, preventive and rehabilitative dimensions in treating of diseases, disorders or disabilities.

Physiotherapist work day in and day out to achieve movement and pain free lives for their patients.

The contribution of Physiotherapists in making patient pain free and function normally.

The origins of physical therapy as a professional group date back to Per Henrik Ling who founded the Royal Central Institute of Gymnastics (RCIG) in 1813 for massage, manipulation, and exercise. Other countries soon followed. In 1894 four nurses in Great Britain formed the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. In 1921 APTA (American Physical Therapy Association) was formed. World War I and II saw an increase in practice and spread of physical therapy as a profession and many parent bodies were formed to organize this profession.

Physiotherapy entered late in India and spread slowly. Today there are more than 6000 practicing physiotherapists in India which is much below the required ratio. However, people seeking physiotherapy treatment are very few as it is not a direct contact practice in India unlike many western countries.

Physical therapists are experts in developing and maintaining people’s ability to move and function throughout their lives. With an advanced understanding of how the body moves and what keeps it from moving well, they promote wellness, mobility and independence. They treat and prevent many problems caused by pain, illness, disability and disease, sport and work related injuries, ageing and long periods of inactivity. Physical therapists are educated over several years, giving them a full knowledge of the body’s systems and the skills to treat a wide range of problems.

Physiotherapists can specialize in areas such as geriatrics, sports, pediatrics, orthopedics, women’s health. Whichever area they may be in, the role of the physical therapist is to improve and restore motion to people’s lives. Physical therapists:

  • Significantly improve mobility to perform daily activities;
  • Provide an alternative to painful and expensive surgery, in many cases;
  • Manage or eliminate pain without medication and its side effects.
